Why You Should Hire a Professional for Emergency Garage Door Repair

While homeowners can perform quick fixes like track lubrication, it’s best to call a professional for garage door repair, given the following factors:

Safety: Garage doors are heavy and under a lot of tension from springs and cables. This makes them especially dangerous when mishandled. A repair professional will have the relevant experience and knowledge of safety precautions.

Expertise: These door systems have more parts than meet the eye, and not all garage doors require the same approach. An expert can identify the state of your garage and what methods and tools best suit its needs.

Appropriate tools: A garage door repair company will have the proper tools, saving you from spending time and money acquiring them.

Warranties: These protections give you peace of mind and confidence in the result of your repair.

Time savings: Identifying and repairing a garage door is time-consuming for most homeowners. A professional can often complete the job quickly, letting you focus on other things.

Cost-effectiveness: DIY repairs initially seem like a smart cost-saving solution. However, they can quickly lead to higher prices than hiring a professional who can get it done right the first time and ensure longer-lasting results.

Repair Your Door With Houston’s Best Garage Door Professionals

Finding the right garage door repair service should not be an added stress in an emergency. These reputable businesses are sound choices for people looking for good customer service, quality products and materials, and comprehensive repairs. Evaluate your choices and contact a top emergency garage door service provider.

As Labor Day weekend approaches, the American Red Cross encourages everyone to make safety a priority while enjoying the unofficial end of summer. Whether you’re gathering for a backyard barbecue, spending time on the water, or heading outdoors for an adventure, a few simple precautions can help ensure a fun and memorable holiday weekend.

Stay Safe at the Grill

Cookouts are a Labor Day tradition, but proper food handling and grilling practices are essential to prevent illness and injuries.

The Red Cross recommends:

Washing hands, utensils and food preparation surfaces before cooking.

Keeping uncooked meats, poultry and seafood separate from ready-to-eat foods such as fruits, vegetables, salads and desserts.

Storing perishable foods in coolers with plenty of ice or freezer packs and avoiding prolonged exposure to the sun.

Bringing hand sanitizer when hand-washing facilities are unavailable.

Keeping children and pets away from the grill and placing grills in open areas away from homes, decks, trees and other flammable materials. Use long-handled grilling tools to help prevent burns.

Practice Water Safety

Drowning can happen quickly, often in as little as 20 to 60 seconds. Constant supervision is critical whenever people are in or around water.

Safety tips include:

Designating a dedicated “water watcher” whose sole responsibility is to supervise swimmers.

Monitoring weather conditions and leaving the water immediately at the first sign of lightning or thunder. Stay indoors and away from water for at least 30 minutes after the last thunderclap or lightning flash.

Wearing a life jacket while boating and in situations that exceed your swimming ability.

Remembering: “Reach or throw, don’t go.” If someone is struggling in the water, reach or throw a flotation device instead of entering the water yourself.

Swimming only at lifeguard-protected beaches and within designated swimming areas. Follow all instructions from lifeguards and be aware of local conditions.

Be Prepared Before You Hit the Trail

For those planning to explore the outdoors, preparation can help prevent emergencies and ensure a safe trip.

Before heading out:

Know the skill level of your group and choose a trail that matches your abilities.

Carry a first aid kit to treat common outdoor injuries such as cuts, bruises, sprains and insect stings.

Learn lifesaving skills by taking a Red Cross First Aid and CPR course and downloading the Red Cross First Aid app.

Share your planned route and location with a family member, friend or neighbor.

Bring plenty of water, nutritious snacks, weather-appropriate clothing and supplies for any pets accompanying you.

It began as an art-focused neighborhood stroll to much larger and possibly crowded street party. It provides a great opportunity to explore the side streets and local shops—not just the main stage areas.

For those mainly interested in the social scene, plan to continue the evening at one of the Heights’ bars or after-parties once the street festival ends.

We look forward to you joining us in August 2027.

In a city as expansive and energetic as Houston, slowing down doesn’t always come naturally. Luckily, a new wave of high-end wellness destinations is making it easier, and far more appealing to slow down. The infrared sauna delivers a deeper, more gentle warmth than traditional saunas, while cold plunges leave you feeling refreshed and re-energized. It’s equal parts ritual and reset. Be sure to inquire about their monthly access packages.

As the heartbeat of the Heights in Houston, 19th Street boasts unique boutiques, bountiful bites, and its own unique charm.

“19th Street is more than just a shopping destination; it’s a community where history, culture, and creativity converge,” said Coryne Rich, Secretary of the Houston Heights Merchant’s Association. “Whether you’re seeking unique gifts, delectable eats, or a stroll through history, 19th Street offers an experience that’s authentically Houston.”

Founded in 1891 as one of Houston’s earliest planned communities, historic 19th Street in the Heights offered early residents a cleaner, higher-elevation alternative to the swampy downtown of the city in its earliest form. Designed to be a “streetcar suburb”, the neighborhood was built to be close to the electric streetcars that helped broaden Houston’s horizons and arrived the same year that 19th Street was founded. Thanks to the streetcars along with some ingenuity, the Heights quickly became a haven for middle-class families, artists, and entrepreneurs.

Prior to electric streetcars, mule-drawn streetcars could be seen on early Houston streets, but the arrival of the electric streetcar helped connect the newly formed Houston Heights neighborhood to other areas such as downtown and the commercial districts. The Houston Heights Street Railway Company, founded by the developers of the Heights, began operating electric trolleys to and from downtown around 1892–1893. This connection was crucial in marketing the Heights as a healthy, elevated, and modern place to live—perfect for families who still needed to get to work in the city.

At its peak, Houston’s streetcar system boasted more than 70 miles of track and gave people freedom to live farther from the dense, industrial core of the city while still staying connected. In the Heights, that convenience helped build a strong, self-sufficient community with its own schools, shops, and character. 19th Street served as the commercial heartbeat of the neighborhood. Early Heights residents ambled down 19th Street to gather, shop, dine, and bank. Thanks to historical preservation efforts, some of the original buildings from the early 1900s still stand today, and these preserved facades and brick-lined sidewalks tell a story of a community that values its roots even as it evolves.

The Heights is known for its fiercely independent spirit, and 19th Street is representative of that essence. Unlike other neighborhoods in the Houston area that are dominated by restaurant chains and big box stores, 19th Street is largely composed of locally owned and unique businesses, like vintage clothing stores, galleries, record stores, and more, that reflect the charming personality of the neighborhood. It’s a place for creativity and individuality and a key part of what makes the Heights such a beloved enclave.

“As part of Texas’ earliest planned community, the Heights was designed with 19th Street as its commercial and social nucleus,” said Rich. “Over the decades, it has witnessed the evolution of Houston, reflecting the city’s growth and diversity. Preserving this history isn’t just about maintaining buildings; it’s about honoring the stories, cultures, and traditions that have shaped our community.”

The street’s walkability, historic architecture, and community-driven events create an atmosphere that’s both nostalgic and contemporary, making it a unique destination in Houston. Visitors can enjoy a delightful local adventure by strolling down 19th on any given weekend or weekday.

The Houston Clothing Swap ushers in conscious consumerism with the Conscious Consumer Collective

“There is nothing wrong with not being able to afford clothing,” said Sam Lopez, Co-Founder of The Houston Clothing Swap. “There is nothing wrong with wearing second-hand items. There is nothing wrong with repurposing old materials to make new clothing out of. That’s the beauty of sustainability. You make it work. You make it yours. It doesn’t look any one particular way.”

With the mission of building a community that celebrates conscious consumerism and makes the basic need of clothing accessible for all, Sam Lopez, Raquel Sandate, and Diana Cwick created The Houston Clothing Swap. With a relatively simple concept, they organized this unique non-profit to address a somewhat complex problem.

“What kickstarted the concept of clothing swaps stemmed from a place of need; the need for clothing during times when we could not afford it, the need for change in the ways that over consumption has contributed to landfills, and to make the basic need for clothing accessible FOR ALL,” stated Lopez.

Conscious consumerism encourages buyers to make shopping decisions based on environmental or ethical decisions. The problem with clothing and “fast fashion” is multifaceted. On the social front, some people may not be able to afford clothes that they need for work or school, making it difficult to obtain what they need. Other people might have unwanted items that sit around, taking up space, while there is need in the greater community. From an environmental standpoint, many people choose to donate unwanted items but don’t realize that their discarded clothing items end up in landfills, which contributes to environmental pollution from chemicals being released into the soil and groundwater and taking up valuable space in the landfills.

“Raquel planted the seeds early on when she began hosting swaps in 2019 on her own. It was from her that so much of the Houston community even became aware that this sort of free exchange could be possible,” said Lopez. “There was a point in her life where she couldn’t afford to buy clothing. At the same time, she noticed how many people were holding onto items they no longer used. That’s when the idea came to Raquel to create a space where people can come together to exchange items at no cost.”

Diana watched Raquel’s self-generated clothing swaps and Sam watched documentaries that taught her about the practice of donated clothes clogging landfills. What started as a small movement of a more individual nature evolved into something truly special between the three women.

Sam started small by buying second-hand clothing first and ultimately attending Raquel’s clothing swaps starting in 2022, and hosting smaller clothing swaps in 10 x 10 tents at markets. They knew that a clothing-swap movement could be brought to a larger audience in Houston. As the project evolved and expanded, word about their movement has spread and the numbers are truly impressive. The small but mighty trio hosted their first clothing swap in April of 2024 and became an official non-profit, The Houston Clothing Swap, in December of 2024.

“The Houston Clothing Swap has only had two swaps so far, and each one has outgrown the last,” remarked Lopez. “Our first had 200-300 people, our second had 400-500, and we project that our third in April will have 1,000 plus in attendance.”

The process during a clothing swap makes it easy for shoppers to come in and find what they are looking for. Much like shopping at a thrift store, visitors can browse clothing items on tables and racks, organized by size, and pick out what speaks to them. They can even try the items in a fitting room. Best of all, shoppers can take home the items for free if they fit, or return them to the rack if they don’t. The organization supplies a need—clothes—and keeps unwanted items out of landfills.

A truly resourceful group, the women do everything from filming events, marketing online, organizing volunteers, gathering donations, planning swap events and getting the word out. Sam is the Chief Director of Content and Media as well as the vendor and volunteer coordinator, Raquel is the Chief Financial Officer as well as the event and sponsor coordinator, and Diana is the Chief Operations Manager as well as the charity and partnership outreach coordinator.

Much of their success is attributed to content and an audience they’ve built on Instagram in addition to their reputation in a community that is as passionate about sustainability as they are. In addition to future clothing swaps and the anticipation of a growing movement, the trio has exciting plans for the future.

“Our plans are to expand beyond just The Houston Clothing Swap. That’s why we formed our nonprofit, Conscious Consumer Collective,” added Lopez. “The goal is to pour onto the Houston community, and beyond, by filling in the gaps where there are needs. We can’t say too much just yet, but we have plans to add smaller events throughout the year to help out different age brackets with varying needs.”

The ingenuity of The Houston Clothing Swap aims to solve multiple problems simultaneously, while providing people with beautiful, fashion-forward items that fill a need and allow people to express their personal creativity.

“Everyone can walk around in gorgeous vintage, repurposed, and secondhand pieces for centuries and never have to put a penny towards fast fashion,” said Lopez. “We are in such a surplus of clothing, shoes, and accessories globally that nobody ever needs to buy new, never needs to go without, and never needs to consume at the expense of the Earth. Once we start becoming conscious consumers, we can all do our part to save the world.”

Houston Health Department is Now Offering Updated COVID-19 Shots to Uninsured, Underinsured Children and Adults

The Houston Health Department is now offering free updated 2023-24 COVID-19 vaccines to adults and children lacking health insurance or enrolled in health plans that don’t cover all vaccination costs.

The department’s four health centers and weekly mobile vaccination clinics across Houston are providing the updated Moderna and Pfizer-BioNTech shots.

“Getting an updated vaccine is the best way people can ensure they develop defenses against the COVID-19 virus,” said Dr. David Persse, chief medical officer for the City of Houston. “It’s best to secure protection offered by a COVID-19 shot before our area begins grappling with the spike in cases in November or the peak in December as we’ve experienced during the pandemic these last few years.”

It is recommended that everyone six months and older receive an updated vaccine by the end of October to reduce their risk of developing severe illness, hospitalization, long COVID-19 and death.

The updated vaccines target the XBB lineage of the Omicron variant and are better able to fight currently circulating variants.

Disease monitoring by the health department indicates that nearly 5,000 people in Houston have died due to complications from COVID-19 infection since the start of the pandemic.

The federal government in previous years provided free COVID-19 vaccines for everyone, but distribution changed in September when the shots moved to the commercial market. The vaccines are still free for most people through their private health insurance, Medicare and Medicaid plans. People with insurance may need to use an approved, in-network pharmacy or healthcare facility.

The department offers the updated shots to uninsured and underinsured adults through the Bridge Access program, launched by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) two months ago to provide free COVID-19 vaccines through December of 2024.

It offers the shots to children who are either uninsured, underinsured, enrolled in Medicaid or CHIP or eligible for the Vaccines For Children program.

Department health centers and their locations are:

La Nueva Casa De Amigos Health Center, 1809 N. Main Street,

Northside Health Center, 8504 Schuller Road,

Sharpstown Health Services, 6201 Bonhomme Road, and

Sunnyside Health Center, 4410 Reed Road.

People can get the updated COVID-19 vaccine at least 2 months after their last COVID-19 shot. They also need to wait three months after having a COVID-19 infection before getting the updated shot.

Uninsured and underinsured adults can also opt to get a free COVID-19 vaccine at retail pharmacies participating in Bridge Access program including, CVS, Walgreens and the smaller and independent pharmacies participating under the eTrueNorth umbrella.

For more information, people can call the department’s call center at 832-393-4220 or visit HoustonHealth.org.

Houston Health Confirms City's Youngest Covid-19 Death

A girl under ten is the city’s youngest confirmed pediatric COVID-19 death, the Houston Health Department announced Wednesday January 1.

The child, who is Black and had underlying health conditions, died in mid-October at a Houston hospital. Genomic sequencing did not identify the variant of virus that infected her.

Privacy laws prevent the health department from providing any other identifiable information.

“The death of a child under any circumstance is heartbreaking. On behalf of the City of Houston, I extend my condolences to the girl’s family during this unimaginable time of grief,” said Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner. “This tragic COVID-19 related death serves as a reminder that we must get vaccinated, mask up, and get tested to protect our community during the Omicron surge, especially children too young to get vaccinated.”

As of January 12, 2022, there are 3,978 confirmed COVID-19 deaths of Houstonians. One was under the age of ten, seven (0.18%) were between 10 and 19, 1.2% were in their 20s, 3.5% were in their 30s, 8.3% in their 40s, 16.1% in their 50s, 24.2% in their 60s, 21.9% in their 70, and 24.7% were 80 and older.

Getting vaccinated helps prevent serious illness, hospitalization, and death; it also helps reduce the spread of COVID-19. Since COVID-19 vaccination began, nearly all Texas COVID-19 deaths are among people who are not fully vaccinated.

People ages 5 and up are eligible for the Pfizer vaccine while people ages 18 and up are eligible for the Moderna and Johnson & Johnson vaccines. Booster shots are available to people ages 12 and up.

With the very contagious Omicron variant rapidly spreading, the health department urges everyone, regardless of vaccination status, to wear a face covering in public indoor places and crowded outdoor settings.

“While most children who get COVID-19 recover, this tragedy is an example of how our youngest can get seriously ill and lose their lives to this disease,” said Dr. David Persse, chief medical officer for the City of Houston. “Children who have underlying conditions are especially vulnerable to poor outcomes from COVID-19, especially when it comes to the possibility of co-infection with other respiratory illnesses.”

Getting vaccinated or tested for COVID-19 at health department-affiliated sites is free and does not require proof of residency, citizenship, or insurance.

The health department provides dozens of free COVID-19 vaccination and testing sites across the city. Sites and schedules can be found at houstonhealth.org or by calling 832-393-4220

Luu

I was 19 and attending a Spanish study abroad program in Madrid through the University of Houston, when a stranger approached. I’d been at a restaurant with a large group of friends and acquaintances whining about not being able to call my boyfriend back in Texas, when this young man I hadn’t noticed before leaned toward me.

“I know where you can make a phone call,” he said in Spanish-accented English. His voice was smooth and warm. I didn’t hesitate before gratefully accepting his offer and following him outside. Moments later, as he was driving us too fast and too far out of the city, I knew I’d made a terrible, terrible mistake.

When he finally stopped the car, he put a knife to my throat. He spat hideous words in my ear, detailing how he planned to kill and rape me—in that order. What happened next was a blur fueled by my determination not to die. I kicked, slapped, hit, screamed.

Somehow, I got away.

Afterward, I blamed myself for being so stupid, for ignoring my instincts, for putting myself in such a situation. I didn’t know his name. I couldn’t identify his car. I thought, what good would it do to call the police?

Turns out my seemingly strange reaction is common; in the United States, nearly 80 percent of sexual assaults are never reported.

WHY DO VICTIMS OF NONSEXUAL VIOLENT CRIMES USUALLY INVOLVE AUTHORITIES WHILE MOST RAPE SURVIVORS REMAIN SILENT?

I’m grown now, a novelist and mother of a 21-year-old daughter and an 18-year-old son. The fact that my children are close to the age I was when I was attacked has made me hypervigilant of their safety. That they are young adults in Texas has made me hyperaware of attacks on their rights, especially after the U.S. Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade.

I was utterly appalled when I read research in the Journal of the American Medical Association regarding the number of rape-related pregnancies in the 14 U.S. states with total abortion bans. Since those bans took effect, it’s estimated that more than half a million rapes occurred in those states, yielding almost 65,000 pregnancies.

In Texas alone, the study estimates that roughly 212,000 rapes led to 26,000 pregnancies.

Based on the aforementioned statistic about silence, most of those rapes were never reported. That means, horrifyingly, about 410,785 rapists nationwide got away with their crimes and carried their lives unpunished. Their victims, I’m certain, did not. And I understand why many don’t speak out.

The only person I told about my attack was a friend I’d been with earlier that night. After I’d hitched back to the city, many hours later with a torn shirt, bloodied arms, and a shattered spirit, she said we had to go to the authorities.

I knew I would never forget the feeling of that knife at my throat, but I refused to tell anyone else. Not the police, not the school, not my mother. Nobody. I just wanted to forget about it. Although I escaped with only minor physical injuries, the psychic wounds have endured more than three decades—in part because I tried to pretend nothing had happened.

According to researcher Sandra Caron, one-third of college women who experience sexual assault tell no one, not even one friend. By comparison, a 2022 Bureau of Justice Statistics victimization survey estimated that 64 percent of robberies and 81 percent of cases of vehicle theft were reported to police.

Why do victims of nonsexual violent crimes usually involve authorities while most rape survivors remain silent? Caron says most survivors, as I did, blame themselves. Or they feel society will blame them.

Remember then-20-year-old swimmer Brock Allen Turner who was convicted of rape in 2016 after publicly assaulting a woman on the Stanford University campus? His father objected to the proposed six-year sentence, calling it “a steep price to pay for 20 minutes of action out of his 20 plus years of life.”

As a parent, I can perhaps understand—but not excuse—a parent saying something so reprehensible in defense of their child. But what about the judge? Aaron Persky sentenced Turner to only six months, saying, “A prison sentence would have a severe impact.” The judge was more concerned about the perpetrator’s future than the survivor’s.

Such decisions reinforce survivors’ fears about how they will be treated if and when they come forward.

In her testimony, Turner’s victim described the harrowing effects of the attack, and its aftermath. “If you think I was spared, came out unscathed, that today I ride off into the sunset while you suffer the greatest blow, you are mistaken,” she wrote. “Nobody wins.”

Fear of being held responsible for their rape. Fear of losing control of the situation. Fear of not being believed. Fear of getting in trouble. Fear of being labeled. Fear of being abused again. Fear of losing someone. (Yet another grim statistic: Over 90 percent of juvenile victims know the perpetrator.) To many, involving authorities feels like being assaulted twice.

The #MeToo movement that began in 2017 shifted public discourse, at least for a while, and in a recall election, Judge Persky was removed from the bench.

Organizations such as the Rape, Abuse and Incest National Network and the Houston Area Women’s Center support survivors. But there is still a long way to go to enable more victims to break their silence.

Post-Madrid, I thought I’d successfully hidden the truth from myself, but something as traumatic as that doesn’t magically disappear. It’s the kind of story that lives deep inside your bones.

I turned to athletics to regain a sense of power and safety, specifically competitive bodybuilding and martial arts. Eventually, I began teaching self-defense classes to women and girls, sharing an abbreviated version of my assault. For my students, it’s a useful scaffolding, explaining how violent attacks unfold. For me, it’s made that awful night easier to talk about. Still, until 2021, I hadn’t told anyone the full story.

That year, my 19-year-old daughter was preparing to drive cross-country from her college campus to spend the summer in Texas. I thought about how strong and capable, and yet how vulnerable and exposed, she would be during her trip. I couldn’t stop thinking about the vagaries of violence and victimhood, safety and security, guilt and grief. At that point, she knew some of what had happened to me, but I felt I had to tell her all of it.

Afterward, I decided to deal with the suppressed details of my attack in the most therapeutic way I know: by fictionalizing it. Writing The Young of Other Animals, the book that grew out of this story, helped me let go of the self-blame and shame I’d been carrying.

I wonder whether that healing would’ve started 30 years ago, if I’d talked about it then. And I wonder if I might’ve prevented my assailant from hurting someone else if I’d told police. I’ll never know.

But I do know now that remaining silent doesn’t solve anything.

Half a million rapes in 14 states is too many. More than 212,000 rapes in Texas is too many. Any is too many. At the very least, we must try to make it easier and safer for survivors of sexual violence to come forward, seek help, and begin to heal.

Scholarships were awarded to 50 members of Boys & Girls Clubs across the U.S., in the amount of $5,000 per recipient, with more than half (52 percent) representing first-generation college students.
